The Afro-Brazilian Culture Class combines theoretical and practical classes about Afro-Brazilian Culture. Participants receive a profound introduction to Candomblé (Afro-Brazilian religion) and the history of Afro-Brazilian culture, rituals and music, economic and social problems, and more.
You will visit an Afro-Brazilian Candomblé religious ceremony; go to markets and to Afro-Brazilian Museums and institutions. Students soon understand that these are not just cultural activities, but an intense introduction to Bahian philosophy and way of life.

During the Capoeira Classes, the teacher, trained in Afro-Brazilian dances, will give you first notions of Capoeira movements that is famous in Salvador and always shown and used during the Carnaval.

The Berimbau is a percussion instrument with African origins. It produces an exotic, melodious sound during the Capoeira circles and festivals.

During the Berimbau Class you will learn how to make and how to play the berimbau. A professional instructor and percussionist explains the essential parts and elements of the instruments, and then shows the most important rhythms for which the instruments are used for. He teaches you how to construct your own berimbau, and you will take home your instruments on the last day of the course.

Enjoy these classes in the wonderful exotic city of Salvador da Bahia wich is the second most touristic city of Brazil and has an interesting mixture of African and Portuguese influences, music, dance, food and dress.


Afro-Brazilian Culture, Capoeira and Berimbau Classes:

Salvador Hotel Accommodations:
-6 nights at Mar Azul Hotel, located on Barra beach, within 5 minutes walking distance of the school. Breakfast included daily at the hotel.

Classes:
-Two (2) 60-minute Capoeira Class for one week. Classes are held in the afternoon and consist of a theoretical and a practical part. A professional teacher gives a general introduction to different rhythms and dances or styles, resuming history, tradition and development of Capoeira.
-Two (2) 60-minute Afro-Brazilian Classes for one week. Classes are held in the afternoon and consist of a theoretical and a practical part. Participants receive a profound introduction to Candomblé (Afro-Brazilian religion) and the history of Afro-Brazilian culture.
-One Berimbau Class for one week. This professional lesson includes a booklet about theory, tradition, and tendencies of the use of that instrument in Africa as well as in Capoeira and Brazilian music, the professional lessons and the instrument.

Tours:
-Full Day Salvador City Tour featuring Pelourinho, the Mercado Modelo (handcraft market) and other historical sites. This tour includes a typical Bahian lunch at Senac.
-Folkloric show with typical Bahian dinner at Solar do Unhão Fort.
